Marketing a leadership and people development business

In her words, Dominique Stillman explains how we have helped her understanding of the marketing process and the positive impact it is having on the performance of her business.
Before I met and got to know Sixth Sense Marketing, I had lots of ideas for developing my business, but in my mind, I couldn’t make them hang together. Also, I wasn’t sure which ones were the best for me to implement or in what order. Nick has helped bring a clarity to my thoughts on marketing, and an understanding of the importance of consistency over time to help my business to grow.
I am a leadership and development practitioner with additional skills in NeuroCoaching. I help people and teams at work to improve performance by coaching them to understand how to channel the body’s natural chemicals positively when facing situations which raise anxiety levels. My work is with business leaders, executive teams, project teams and other groups. I help people with training and development so they can achieve more, or get them through a period of transition or change.
Understanding my ideal client
Nick helped me to analyse and understand my ideal client, and to be aware of the ‘trigger’ situations in a business that may lead to a company to search out my services. This led to:
- A review of my personal networking strategy and a tweaking of the events I attend so I was in the same room as people who were possible referrers down the line.
- An understanding of the idea that because I can’t control the ‘trigger’ circumstances, I need to promote my business all of the time, i.e. it is in the shop window, whenever the next client is passing by.
Next, we worked on number of subjects that I would take the lead on and about. I have such a passion for helping people. I belief fully that people can improve when they know how to use the tools that I can provide them with. There has never been a shortage of content or commentary, just uncertainty about how to phrase it and where to place it. LinkedIn was to become a key platform for me and my business.
Content needed to be written and visual
Nick also challenged me to produce video content as well as written blogs. Although I was initially apprehensive, it was clear that I was selling my brand of leadership and development coaching, and I needed to showcase that better with video in my blogs and snippets on my website to help people get to know me. As an aside, Nick also did a new website for Reach New Heights – which is ten times better than the one it replaced.
Finally, we did some work to segment my clients and contacts and to create a list of those that we would engage with on social media. Using LinkedIn, I have been able to demonstrate to my primary target group that I remain active and on their radar. The combination of the content and the targeting has generated the right kind of ‘chatter’ and valuable online and offline exchanges that are now drip-feeding fresh enquiries into my business.
The client journey has many twists and turns
What I’ve learnt about marketing is that a client’s journey is not a straight line, it has many twists and turns. I understand now how to stay on the radar of the people who are most important to me and my business. I’m also getting better at using networking to find the right kind of people who will help the business grow. Sixth Sense Marketing has been a massive help guiding me and our work continues.
